The D-50 (also known as the D-5 on other countries) was Sony's first portable cd player for the consumer market. Similar in design to the Sony CDP 101 (Sony's first cd player). Power came from a 9 volt power plug or a battery station which is quite rare nowadays.

Sound quality was good but the player offered no bass amplification. Even though it was marketed as a "portable" player it's not really practical as a portable player. The D 50 has no system to prevent disc skipping so carrying it around while playing was a real pain. Basic functions like stop, track skip (forward and back) and pause were featured.

It also came with a Line Out option to allow a connection to a stereo amplifier which was handy for consumers that didn't have a dedicated cd deck at home. A red version was also released and is quite rare to find these days and is quite valuable.
