1988 was the year Sony released the D-88 Discman. A most unique Discman as it accepts  regular sized cd's and 8cm cd's. As can be seen in the photo to the right there is a slide on the bottom of the unit. While the cover is closed you can slide it back and forth to adjust between 8 cm and 12 cm cd's. This will move the spindle to the appropriate position.

Designed mainly for the 8 cm cd's in the 80's during the introduction of compact discs and cd singles being produced in 8 cm it was quite a unique design.

With a regular 12 cm cd it presents the listener with a great view of the cd spinning nicely while playing. If you have a cd with great colors or artwork it will provide a effect. Using a regular sized cd renders this useless in your pocket of course. As with a lot of the early Discmans there is no system to prevent disc skips.

Functions wise it comes with the usual play, stop, track skip and also a repeat button. Incorporated with the play button is pause also which is quite handy. There is also a Hold button. A small lcd display shows the track number and the battery status. The battery is held within the battery box that is attached to the rear of the unit. The batteries are now impossible to find in new condition. Although there are folks out there that have modified them to accept LiPo's.
